Mokena's Road to the Parade of Lights Runs Through Village Hall's Calendar

by Lauren Roman

Over the next six weeks, Mokena's calendar comes almost entirely from four local institutions: the Village, the Mokena Park District, the Mokena Community Public Library District and the Mokena Chamber of Commerce. The commercial pipeline announced in the spring has added one new storefront, a coffee drive-thru with an October 1 grand opening. The rest of LaGrange Road's plans are still listed as coming soon. If you live here, the dates that shape your late fall are civic ones. They start with a construction alert and end at a red barn.

Here is the season in order, starting with the change to how you drive that begins next week.

Wolf Road at 195th Street turn restrictions start Monday

The first date on the list is Monday. Construction at Wolf Road and 195th Street is scheduled to begin October 26 and continue through mid-November, according to a Village of Mokena traffic alert posted October 15. The work comes in two stages:

  1. Stage 1 blocks the left turn from northbound Wolf Road onto westbound 195th Street. It also blocks the right turn from eastbound 195th Street onto southbound Wolf Road. Detours use 194th Street and 114th Avenue.

  2. Stage 2 keeps the left-turn restriction from northbound Wolf onto westbound 195th in place.

Wolf Road matters for the rest of this calendar. It marks one end of the Parade of Lights route on Front Street, so the street you will use to reach the season's biggest event is under restriction for most of the month leading up to it. If 195th is part of your daily route, plan on using 194th Street or 114th Avenue until the Village posts that the work is done.

The leaf calendar ends November 9

The Village's October 2026 bulletin lists two free leaf-and-branch pickups, October 26 and November 9. November 9 is the last pickup on that bulletin. Pickups are scheduled, not automatic, so book the date you want ahead of time. The bulletin tells residents to call Village Hall at (708) 479-3900 or book online at mokena.org.

The same bulletin explains a related program. The Village's fall 2026 50/50 Parkway Tree Planting Program let homeowners add a tree to the public parkway next to their property for $165 per tree, with the Village paying the rest. Applications closed October 19. If you applied, your tree will be one of the listed species: Chinkapin Oak, Allegheny Serviceberry, Northern Catalpa, Hackberry, Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree, Ivory Pillar Tree Lilac and Hybrid Elm. The Village chooses species to keep the parkway tree population diverse and plants in available locations that match its existing tree inventory. Questions about species or placement go to that same Village Hall number.

Some context explains the timing. After the August storms, the Village posted a storm tree-cleanup notice that set Friday, August 28 as the last day for storm-damage pickup. Two months later, the Village's fall program is about planting.

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year

Halloween week starts at the library. The Mokena Public Library hosts "The Legend of Resurrection Mary" on Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in its Program Room. Details are on the library's event calendar.

On Friday, October 30, the Park District's Golden Gatherings series holds "Halloween Boo & Bites," the first of three seasonal gatherings in its Fall 2026 program guide. Times and location are in the brochure.

Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31. The Village has set trick-or-treat hours from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Saturday Halloween means daylight trick-or-treating, with more kids out in the afternoon than on a school night. The Village's safety notes in the same bulletin focus on drivers: slow down and scan the road. If you are sitting this year out, the Village offers a "No Tricks or Treats" sign. You can pick one up at Village Hall or print it from mokena.org and post it on your front door.

November belongs to the library and the Park District

After Halloween, the calendar shifts from big nights to steadier programming, most of it from the library. The Mokena Public Library calendar lists two all-day, drop-in activities:

  • Family Stories Month runs all day from November 1 through November 30.

  • Children's Scavenger Hunt, DINOvember runs all day from November 2 through November 7.

The Park District's second Golden Gatherings event, "Turkey Treats & Thanks," is November 13. Between the November 9 leaf pickup and the expected mid-November end of the Wolf Road work, the middle of the month is when the season's logistics wind down and the holiday events take over.

November 21 puts the season on Front Street

The Mokena Chamber of Commerce's annual Parade of Lights steps off Saturday, November 21, at 5 p.m. on Front Street between Wolf Road and Division Street, according to the Visit Chicago Southland event listing. The Will County Gazette reported on October 7 that the parade is free to participate in and will end with the Village Tree Lighting.

One practical note: the Village's own calendar page for the parade still shows the 2025 date of Saturday, November 22. The 2026 date is Saturday, November 21. If you saved the event last year, update your calendar.

Front Street is where the season's civic thread reaches Old Town, and it is the stretch to plan an evening around that night. Our Mokena neighborhood guide and our earlier roundup of everyday conveniences and things to do around Mokena cover the places nearby.

December ends at the Red Barn

The Park District closes its Golden Gatherings series with "Jingle & Mingle" on December 11. The next day, December 12, is Breakfast with Santa at the Yunker Farm Red Barn. The Fall 2026 brochure doesn't list a start time for Breakfast with Santa, so check with the Park District before you plan your morning.

The new storefronts: one open, several still coming

The commercial side of Mokena's fall is quieter than the spring announcements suggested.

The one new arrival is on 191st Street. The Human Bean announced a grand opening for its drive-thru coffee shop at 9681 W. 191st St. on Thursday, October 1, 2026. It joins the local coffee options in our guide to the best coffee shops in Mokena.

On LaGrange Road, the bigger project is still in progress. The Village Board approved an amendment to the Planned Unit Development at 19950 S. LaGrange Road at its March 9, 2026 meeting. The amendment included a Special Use Permit for a drive-thru, clearing the way for Hawaiian Bros Island Grill and Crisp & Green to share the site. The Village's spring newsletter said construction was expected to begin in spring 2026. As of this fall, Crisp & Green's locations page still lists the Mokena address as "Coming Soon" with no opening date.

Several other projects are in the same position. In April, the Daily Southtown, republished by Hotel Online, reported three more:

  • Lakeside Bank had started construction in late March at 19994 S. LaGrange Road.

  • Emerald Social, a planned restaurant and food-truck venue, was headed for 10020 W. 191st St. Emerald Social's website still describes a planned tap house and food-truck park at that address.

  • A 96-room, four-story Staybridge Suites was planned for Meridian Centre, with construction expected to begin in the spring.

None of these projects has a public opening date yet, so none of them is part of this year's holiday stretch. When they do open, most will be on LaGrange Road and 191st Street. The 191st Street openings will sit near the new Human Bean, while the seasonal events stay downtown on Front Street and out at Yunker Farm.

Seasons like this one, when the calendar runs on civic dates and new businesses are still taking shape, are when we hear the most questions about what is changing on specific blocks. If you'd like to know how Mokena's new openings and fall routines fit with your own plans, The Lauren Roman Group is happy to talk it through.
